Rob Zombie is just as well known for his movies as he is for his music these days. Founding member of the heavy metal band White Zombie in the 1980s, he eventually went solo in 1997 releasing his first solo album(and arguably still his best) - 'Hellbilly Deluxe' in 1998. Since then Zombie has concentrated more on movie making than his music, with his albums ranging in quality over the years. His last album 'Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor' was a return to form though, and with the same band still intact, I have high hopes that this new album will continue that high quality.
The album opens with 'The Last Of The Demons Defeated!'which is a short minute and a half introduction that has Zombie singing the album title over and over on top of a heavy mid-tempo guitar and drum beat. It sets the tone nicely for what is to come. 'Satanic Cyanide! The Killer Rocks On' continues the mid tempo industrial heavy sound and at a length of 2:58, it is surprisingly the second longest track on the album. 'The Life And Times Of A Teenage Rock God' has a familiar feel to it and again is a super heavy track with Zombie singing 'I'm a teenage rock god, teenage rock god, all the freaks come worship me'. I could really see Marilyn Manson singing this song at his peak.
Well, everybody's fucking in a U.F.O.' is one track that adds to the diversity of the album. It has a typical Zombie type of sample at the start of the song, yet leads into Rob singing in a hillbilly type of voice throughout the verses before exploding into a full heavy groove for the chorus. I can see this being a really divisive song among fans, yet I feel it adds diversity to the album which is one of the albums strengths. After this we have another short interlude type of track 'A Hearse That Overturns With The Coffin Bursting Open' where guitarist John 5 plays a nice little acoustic number before a typical Zombie classic 'The hideous exhibitions of a dedicated gore whore' kicks you in the face. 'She got a Dracula tattooed on her neck, sunlight always makes her sick'. This song could easily fit onto one of Zombie's early solo albums with a horror theme running throughout the lyrics. 'Medication for the melancholy' is my pick for best song on the album. The riff is huge and it maintains a fast pace throughout the whole song and probably reminds me most of White Zombie days.
'In the age of the consecrated vampire we all get high' is another White Zombie type of track with 'More Than Human' coming to mind throughout the song. Short and sharp yet heavy, the song has everything a Rob Zombie fan loves. My only problem with the track is it feels like it is about a minute too short and just seems to abruptly end. 'Super-Doom-Hex-Gloom Part One' is another short interlude track that features some creepy keyboards before launching into another classic Zombie song in 'In The Bone Pile'. This is another great track that has a great groove to it and is one of the highlights on the album. 'Get your boots on! That's the end of rock 'n' roll' is a cool song yet doesn't really add anything you haven't heard before from Zombie, while album closer 'Wurdalak' even though not one of my favourites on the album, at least provides something different in the way of a heavy sludge type of sound with a creepy feel throughout ending with just a piano closing the record.
Zombie's new album title'The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser' is nearly as long as the album itself! However the shortness of the album keeps it fresh and makes you want to spin the tunes again. The sound really isn't much different to past albums with is industrial metal sound and samples throughout, but I can see both old and new fans happy with the sound and material within the album. Some of the songs could have really used an extra minute or so and seem unfinished, yet others benefit from the shortness and avoid that feeling of overstaying it's welcome! Time will tell where this album sits alongside other Zombie albums, but it has enough diversity, familiarity and also cool songs to be among his best to date...
